
The Winter School at LUMS offers an incredible opportunity to experience life on campus and engage in enriching classes and activities. This programme challenges students' perspectives and equips them with new skills. Designed to help pre-college students acquire beginner-level knowledge, it prepares them to excel in university classrooms of their choice.
Through a variety of educational and interest-based courses, students will explore new academic passions and deepen their understanding of disciplines they enjoy. The programme also includes workshops on the undergraduate application process, ensuring students are well-prepared for their academic journey.
Eligibility: O-Level, Matriculation, IB MYP, A-Level, FSc, and IB DP students are eligible to apply.
The dates of the programme are December 23, 2024 to January 3, 2025. Classes will take place on the LUMS campus, Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
Programme Structure: Throughout the two weeks, students will be fully immersed in the courses mentioned below. Alongside these courses, there will be workshops on various topics.
Please note: The Winter School at LUMS does not provide accommodation to participants. They will have to arrange their own lodging.
This course helps students become confident, persuasive communicators. The course teaches essential skills like crafting meaningful messages, using voice and body language effectively, and connecting emotionally with audiences. Students will also learn techniques to manage anxiety and speak with clarity and conviction in any setting, ensuring they can communicate with impact and authenticity.
By the end of this course, students will understand the concept of a growth mindset and its benefits while also being able to differentiate between a fixed and a growth mindset. They will develop strategies and apply its principles to academic, personal, and future challenges. Students will learn to overcome the fear of failure, embracing learning through effort and perseverance while fostering resilience, emotional intelligence, and a commitment to continuous self-improvement.
This course equips aspiring entrepreneurs with essential skills for business success. Students will learn to spot business opportunities, assess financial viability, secure funding, and create effective business plans with insights. Networking and negotiation techniques will also be covered. The course also delves into customer psychology, sales, marketing, and the art of public speaking and explores strategies for hiring and scaling businesses.
This two-week course takes a deeper dive into research methodology, teaching students how to critically assess information found online. Students will explore the importance of source credibility, bias detection, and the evaluation of evidence to develop well-rounded perspectives. They will engage with current issues like fake news and media manipulation, learning how to differentiate facts from opinions. Through hands-on research projects, students will use the internet as a powerful resource to answer inquiries of personal interest, fostering analytical thinking and informed decision-making.
This course aims to teach students the principles and processes of Design Thinking, a user-centered approach to creative problem-solving. Students will learn how to empathize with users, define challenges, brainstorm innovative ideas, prototype solutions, and test their ideas to address real-world problems. Students will also develop critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills, all while fostering creativity.
